Bully Exposed Response

After reading the article “School Bus Bully Exposed”, I was shocked to hear an adult was promoting such behavior. It is sad that even adults who are there to help students and protect them would promote bullying. The story was that a bus driver allowed older students to bully the younger ones to keep order on the bus. He had a set of rules they had to follow which said “mercy would not be tolerated”. What is worst is that students were not reporting this to the authorities or parents. Finally one person came forward, and then others followed. I think this is an example of how adults can abuse the power they have over children. If we look at this not just as a physical issue but even a mental issue, teachers can sometimes play a role. Whether or not they are trying to, some teachers can go over board with the mental abuse of students. Like with the bus driver he made the older students recite the rules, which probably made them feel like it was something they had to abide by. Teachers sometimes give off this impression that they know a student is going to mess up. They either through body language or comments let students know who they like in the class and who they do not. It is a human quality we can not change. We always judge people. I feel though that in a classroom should be a time for a student to feel un-judge except for their effort they put in. When a student is struggling the teacher should not jump to the conclusion that they are just a bad student, but they should offer to help the student. If students feel like a teacher cares and is approachable, perhaps they can get the help they need to succeed. It may sound corny, but I believe a student will put in as much effort as the teacher if they can see how much the teacher is trying to help.

[...] This is a response to Carrie’s Post about the School Bus Bullying. I liked your ability not just report on the outrageousness of the story, but to connect it to the psychology of the classroom. You made a very astute observation when you said, “I think this is an example of how adults can abuse the power they have over children. If we look at this not just as a physical issue but even a mental issue, teachers can sometimes play a role. Whether or not they are trying to, some teachers can go over board with the mental abuse of students.” Teachers do mentally abuse students the same way that parents can abuse their child without touching them and the way that countries abuse other countries without even thinking about the damage it will eventually do to society and the world. It only takes a spark to start a fire, they say, and we could either spark a fire to destroy our students’ confidence, or spark one to promote it, and it all hinges on what we value as teachers and what we choose to promote.
